That comment catches Rowan off guard again. Maybe... maybe he could. But then they realise, heart clenching painfully, that no. As much as they want to, as much as Max deserves it, he won't ever be able to fully understand, because Rowan has to lie to him because of the damn Litany. And in that moment they hate it more than they've ever hated it before.

Except they could have, because replacing them meant spending money. "I see you lost the jacket today as well."
