[ Max gets a knock very quickly after that message is sent. Keyleth is waiting with a large basket of produce, very much looking like she needs a hug and a shoulder to cry on. ]
Luckily, Max has almost a sixth sense when it comes to detecting when someone needs a hug. No sooner is the door opened than he takes the basket from her with one arm and pulls her into his chest with the other.
Oh, thank goodness. Keyleth wrapped her arms tight around Max and pressed her face to his chest, her shoulders shuddering as she released a shaky breath.
"Sorry." What the fuck is she apologizing for? Existing?? Being sad?? Taking up space and time?? Who the fuck knows, certainly not Keyleth. "I just don't know what to do with myself anymore."
The hand around her back moves in soothing circles over her. His voice is soft like the cooing of a bird. "No need for apologies. You're very welcome here."
As for what to do, maybe he can help with that. "Right now, why don't you come in and have a seat on the sofa. I can make you some tea and we can cuddle under a blanket. Would that help?"
"That would help a lot," Keyleth agreed, letting Max steer her where he wanted her to go while she rubbed at her eyes, not unlike a sad little kid. "I feel so silly. You'd think--" She sighed heavily and shook her head. "You'd think I was helpless or something. Like I'd never been alone before in my life, ever." Which wasn't...exactly what she'd been intending to say, but it was close enough.
He gently took her to the couch and draped a throw blanket around her shoulders. Then, he got down on a knee so he could look into her face, hands still gripping the blanket around her, while he spoke from the bottom of his heart.
"No. I don't think that at all. And I don't think missing someone you care so deeply about makes you weak. You shouldn't have to bear this kind of worry and sadness alone either. I'm glad you came."
That was really nice. Like being wrapped up in a cozy little cocoon. Comforting and comfortable and safe. Keyleth tucked her legs up and burrowed in, leaning in to press her forehead lightly to Max's. "I'm glad I came too," she said quietly, managing a tiny smile. "Thanks. I feel weak. I guess I just needed to be reminded that was stupid."
